I want to paint some dark paneling but I want it to look distressed or antiqued. Any ideas?
I have heard of using a sponge to wipe on but I don't want streaks.

Visit your local library, they will have books on the subject, but you can paint a base colour, then rub the area you want distressed with wax, the top coat of paint will then craze and look distressed.
You can give new wood that old, rustic look with a simple technique. So get distressed!

Steps:
1. Brush the wood with a stiff wire brush. Brush with the grain of the wood to remove a small amount of the cellulose between the grain. This will make the grain stand out.

2. Apply a gray or dark stain to the brushed wood.

3. Wipe away the stain with a cloth while it is still wet. This step will make the grain of the wood appear to stand out, giving it a weathered appearance.

4. Treat the wood with a preservative after you have achieved the desired texture.

Tips:
You can also use a wire brush accessory tool on your electric drill to speed up the sanding process.
if you want a distressed look consider a crackle paint. it looks so good when you are all done and it isn't hard to do at all.

you can buy the crackle in a kit or separately. if you get it separate just choose a shade for the base, that is what will show through the cracks, and then choose a color for the top coat.

paint the base coat first, then the crackle and after that the top coat letting each one dry in between.

good luck your project.
There is a product called crackling you apply it and allow it to dry. Then paint over it, when the paint drys it crackles like antique. You may also paint the paneling and allow it to dry then apply crackling and let it dry then paint again the effect will give the crackles a color. Like: paint it black then crackle then white. It gives a cool affect. Good Luck :)
Go to a good paint store and have them show you kits that you can use and they can explain it on a one to one. This way if things aren't going like you like, you call the store and talk to the same person. Some jobs using sponge make it look home done and not professionally done.Had neighbors who did it this way and she said very easy, & it looked GREAT.Watch decorating shows or go on website for HGTV.
use a crackle glaze then paint
